When the robin sings

‘It is said that robins sing at night because they have adapted to singing when there is less noise in the city. During the day, their songs would be drowned out by the noise of cars, heavy machinery and other urban elements. So, instead, the robins have started singing late at night and early in the morning.’
‘When the robin sings’ is a quartet based in Mallorca, made up of four very unique musicians, each with different musical roots and each bringing their own musical background to a new vision of acoustic folk music.
Living in these modern and hectic times, where information is being consumed at such a tremendous speed and there is little time for reflection, the band felt a need to go the opposite direction; to create a space  where there is a sense of tranquility and time to listen.
The vision became clear: to let the melody guide the arrangements into becoming what they are supposed to be. Sometimes it's a dreamy piano-based soft chord progression that leads the way, sometimes it's a deeply grounded violin with a synth pattern underneath, but always with the melody in focus. It all blends together with heartfelt lyrics to create music that hopefully invites the listener to pause, take a moment and come back to the present moment.
The quartet came together in 2023 and consists of musicians with Scandinavian, Irish and Spanish roots with the intention of finding a unique mix of sounds combining all of these elements together into a kind of alternative folk format.
All four musicians have long artistic trajectories individually, working in different genres, from traditional music all the way to jazz but decided to come together to form “when the robin sings” to meet and sonically explore the band member Marko Lohikari´s compositions.
Although the music is hard to put into any specific genre it is also quite heavily influenced by “Americana” and the “Singer/Songwriter” format as well as drawing inspiration from neoclassical music, and even from pop.
In 2023 they released their debut EP ‘Return to one’ which was followed up with various performances in Spain, such as the PalmaFolk-festival, the FiraB showcase, the “A jazz de Mar” jazz festival, the “Jazz y más” concert series in Mallorca among others.
Their second release, this time a full length album called “Forest tales & Hidden tracks” will be released during 2025 and marks a new chapter for the band, experimenting with new timbres and instrumentations as well as collaborations with additional musicians.
