Nafas Ensemble emerges in 2007 as a musical vehicle for composer and guitarist Jaume Compte. who was seeking at the time a new aesthetic and conceptual direction for his music. The outcome of this change is a much more contemporary language, leaving behind his more traditional approach. It is within this new ecosystem where different instruments are a common meeting space and cohesion.

During the 2020 confinement they participated in a deluxe collaboration on a clip with the popular Turkish group Kardes Türküler. Their continuous look at the Mediterranean musical tradition and their turn to the European classical school has led them to define themselves in a particularly heterodox style, built on an amalgam of influences between the tradition of the East and the contemporaneity of the West. The ensemble is currently undergoing an intense creative process in which it explores sonic spaces that draw on the influences of roots music, improvisation in almost jazzy terms and sometimes minimalist modernity. It is strictly instrumental music that tries to create contemporary landscapes, in which the ensemble of the musicians and the constant interaction between them make the performance a particularly dynamic and evocative experience...

With their music, the group has performed in many different places. Highlights include their participation in festivals and cycles such as the Fajr Music Festival in Tehran (Iran), the Ethno Jazz Festival in Thessaloniki (Greece) and the Palau de la Música in Barcelona as part of the 11th Millennium Festival together with Maria del Mar Bonet, the Evoluciona Música Festival in Burgos, the Live Music Market in Vic, the Traditional Roots Fair in Barcelona (Spain), the Traditional Roots Fair in Barcelona (Spain) and the Festival Evoluciona Música in Burgos (Spain), the Feria de Raíz Tradicional de Manresa, Auditorio Caja Madrid in Barcelona (Más allá del Mediterráneo cycle), Dialectos cycle (Espai Ocubre, Valencia) with Sabir, selected by Artistas en Ruta (Murcia, Alcoy, Seville and Palma), Festival de Canciones del Mediterráneo in Palma, Castillo de Bellver in Palma (2001) with percussionist Glen Vélez.

In 2011 they published Tariq (Fanar Records/Armonía Mundi) in which they made a foray into the world of song with the collaborations of Francisco Albéniz of La Búsqueda, Marcel Cranc and Silvia Pérez Cruz.

They were selected for the Miquel Martí y Pol awards at the V Certamen Terra i Cultura in 2012 for the best song based on a Catalan poet with their song "Ausencia" (poem by Pere Quart). In 2013 they released their fourth album entitled Voda, dedicated to the Balkans.

In 2014 they re-released their previous album, Tariq, on the prestigious English label Arc Music, receiving excellent international reviews and recognition as one of the best world music albums of 2014, according to the specialised US magazine World Music Central.
