Toni Amengual

  • (Mallorca, 1980)

After obtaining a degree in Biology (University of Barcelona, 2003) he has been investigating the most complex species that has ever existed on earth: the Homo Sapiens Sapiens, using photography as his mean of expression.

His work has been exhibited in Spanish photography contests such as Scan Tarragona (2009),  Descubrimientos PhotoEspaña (2010) and in international festivals such as Cortona On the Move (2013). His work “La Sombra del Valle” has been exhibited in the main art showrooms from Catalunya with the exhibition Fairy Tales curated by David Santaeulalia. He has also done individual exhibitions with the work DEVOTOS in the centro de arte Les Bernardes de Salt curated by Pere Paramon and Laura Cornejo. In Mallorca his work HolyDays was exhibited in the Sala Born at Casal Solleric after winning the contest Creart 2016.

He has received prizes and recognitions such as Descubrimientos Photoespaña 2010, Prize Nuevo Documentalismo (La Fábrica 2013), and has been several times finalist at the photoPress contest from La Caixa (2014).

He has published in several national newspapers like El País, La Vanguardia or in specialized art magazines such as Exit Magazine.

He has published two Photo-books that had very good reviews from critics and public. Being PAIN his first auto-edited book, he received the prize to best photo-book PhotoEspaña 2014, and was finalist at the Anarmorphosis Prize and selected to be part of the MOMA collection.

His second auto-edited book, DEVOTOS (2015) won the prize Artlibris in the Arts Santa Mónica and was a finalist in 2015 for the best auto-edited books of the year. These publications have been part of the exhibitions DIWO (Madrid 2015, curated by Juan Pablo Huercanos), autoedit (Centro Huarte, Navarra 2016) and Fenòmen Fotollibre (CCCB 2017).

From year 2009 he combines his own creative work  with teaching. He has given lectures and workshops in the CCB, Blanc Fest and Pati Llimona (Barcelona), Santander Photo (2016), Jornadas de creatividad y arte (Benalmadena 2016). Since 2012 he’s a teacher of the grade of photography at IDEP in Barcelona and director of the Documental Photography Postgrade.
