Lucrècia o Roma libre

Lucrècia o Roma libre

INFORMATION

A tragedy in Alexandrian verses, in the style of French classics, written by the young Joan Ramis i Ramis in 1769 and which remained unknown until the 1960s. A summit of Catalan literature, the most significant work of the neoclassical style in Catalan, which looks towards ancient Rome from the lights of the eighteenth century and which still today connects completely with the public of the twenty-first century. The myth of the Roman lady Lucrecia, who committed suicide in order to face tyranny and in defence of her dignity, was very important for the Enlightenment movement. Not in vain, it is attributed to the heroic act of Lucrezia the unleashing of the citizen revolt that gave rise to the Roman Republic.
